  1. Mean Girls was very accurate, if a little exaggerated. It’s an exploration of the way girls treat each other – the characters are easily identified as people from real life situations.

  2. From an English male point of view I feel that culturally the films have come to not represent but re-present teenagers. I think the characters sort of have an irony to them. Mean Girls being a comedy means that facts become exagerated for humour purposes. I think there are people out there like Regina and I feel that film represents themes about teenagers and stuf everyone encouters – the whole idea of chinese whispers and trust is very accurate and how sometimes as a teenager you feel you cant trust certain people because if someone gets hold of a secret they have to tell someone.
Thirteen I reckon more accurately represents teenagers only for the purpose of the film. Of course these characters have more depth to them and I feel that it was Hardwickes connection with the film. As a female she may have experienced something in her child hood which made her direct the film in this way. The point of this film is about peer pressure which could seem extremely accurate and so many teenagers are pressured into things they would never do and sometimes do not realise it. The whole rebellion teenager is also seen in both the films but in the end is that what they really wanted. Dont they just want to be themselves.
I wouldnt look to deeply in the actors portrayal of the characters but the films portrayal as although they act the part the editing, camera work, sound and the mise-en-scene all form a bigger part to the portrayal of a character along with director intention, rather than an actor.
For a comparison piece perhaps look into films like Clueless or even a British film about teenagers even if it was made in America.

  3. Ive seen both films and i think that they both relate a little bit to real life. Mean Girls is about fitting in with a certain clique, sterotypes (jocks, burn-outs, plastics, geeks etc.), which relates to the teen modern society. However, in Thirteen, its about taking drugs, growing up, participating in sexual acts at the age of 13. To be honest, Teens aged from 12-21 are already doing these things so i guess they are not overexaggerating those films, just trying to get the message out.

  4. mean girls is accurate, maybe a little over exaggerated for humor purposes, and the whole happy ending at the end, that’s probably not how most of the cliques in high school end up.
thirteen is very accurate, in my opinion, because a lot of what happened in that movie happened to me in real life.
i wanted to be best friends with the pretty popular girls, at thirteen i became friends with those girls and got introduced to a whole new world. drugs, drinking, boys, rebellion, etc. not only was my social life a mess, my home life became one too, i started cutting myself, etc, etc. in the end, i found out that my “best friend” was really never my best friend at all and in the end she back stabbed me just to save her own butt.

  5. havin seen both films.. i think that both the films represent teenagers perfectly in two different aspects to which school and peer pressure can lead to as well as growing up. it goes to show no matter what a family back ground you have. your school or your mates your choices are always your own
    if that makes sence..

  6. you can’t sterotype teenagers. thirteen and mean girls are just some portrayals of how some teenagers act. there are girls out there just like the ones from both movies. there are also completley different teens out there too.

  7. Mean girls is pretty accurate, especially all the cliques in the school and how they all react to the plastics. it’s pretty true to life cos theres always a group that people want to be

  8. no. No movie ever accurately represents teenagers. One that does would be the most boring movie in the world, nothing interesting ever really happens in real life like that, sorry… =/

  9. i think that mean girls was fairly accurate but a little exagerated. I dont know about 13, but I didnt know anyone who acted like they did in the movie when i was 13 so id say it was not accurate.
